I think Diego reacted violently when Vidas asked him if Mac had touched him because he was trying to conceal what had actually happened. I think that acting like that gave him the opportunity to bury his past and instead focus on the argument, something he is quite good at. That is why his anger controls him, because he is not ready to face the consequences that the event that happened in his past had and will have. Until he is ready to face it, he will continue to bury it as much as he can because that way he does not have to deal with it.

I do think that Vidas pating him was a clue to something else. It might be a clue to why he doesn't like being called a "faggot".
